What is Botellón?

Spaniards don’t start drinking until later in the evening. It is not abnormal to go to a discotheque at 4 am. They also stay out much later. On the weekends, Spaniards can stay out as late as 7am!

Many people opt to botellón before they go out to the bars. Groups of friends will get bottles of alcohol and drink them together by the river until it is time to go to a discotheque. This is so they don’t have to buy overpriced drinks at the bars. You may also hear the term “lote.” Lote means pack. A lote is a bag with a bottle of alcohol, a soda, a bag of ice, and a cup. It is similar to botellón, in which friends will each have a lote and drink outside together until it is time to go to the bars.

When ordering drinks you can say, “Me pone…” or “Quiero…” Most Spaniards will just get right to the point and say what they want to drink. Then after they are served, they say thank you. Tipping bartenders is not expected or common. The beer to order in Sevilla is Cruzcampo. Other popular drink options are tinto de verano, a combination of red wine and lemon soda, and sangria.

Even though Spaniards drink a lot, they do not normally get overly drunk. Being drunk makes you stand out as a foreigner, so make sure you don’t get sloppy.

We hope you have a great time in Sevilla!
